As the school year comes to its start, many freshman or underclassmen may feel overwhelmed or confused. High school is a big adjustment for many students, and it can be hard to know what to do and how to start. I sent out a form to the upperclassmen to ask them for advice they wish they had starting freshman year. I received 10 pieces of advice that they wanted to share with the underclassmen.
- Make Memories
Hanging out with friends and doing things that you enjoy will help you get through school. This can be as simple as talking to a friend in the hallway or participating in activities during and after school. Either way, sometimes the best memories will come when you least expect it.
- Be Yourself
I know it’s redundant, but It is important to keep in mind. A quote from an upperclassmen, “Don’t be afraid to be yourself. If you cover up parts of yourself, you will be like any other person.” Your time during school is minimal, and this journey is your own, not anyone else’s.
- Enjoy Your Time at Shawnee
Your time at Shawnee is very limited. It doesn’t feel like it now, but the next few years are going to go by quickly. Find something that makes school enjoyable for you. There are countless clubs, sports, electives, and other extracurricular activities. It is not the same for everybody, but the same advice is to make your time here at Shawnee special.
- Take Time For Yourself
While school and grades are very important, they are not everything. All of your self worth is not dependent on your academic success. Everybody is amazing in their own way, no matter your GPA. Make sure that you take some time for your mental health, have some time just for you, get enough sleep, eat healthy foods, and find a good work/life balance. This will help you avoid burnout.
- Be Nice To Others
You never know what someone is going through, and a simple smile in the hallway could make their day. Being kind really costs you nothing. Share your happiness with other people–simple.
- Find Your Place With People and Activities
Finding a community will be very beneficial for you. Try new things and find where you stick. Try to get to know many people to diversify your friend group. The bigger the community, the better your experience will be.
- Learn To Advocate For Yourself
If you are struggling in a class and need help, reach out. You should not suffer in silence. Teachers and guidance counselors are there to help you whenever you need something. You just have to take the first step and ask for help.
- Grades and Classes Matter
Study and work hard in your classes, no matter if the assignments are big or small. Be engaged. Participate. Stay off your cell phones!
- You Are Not Alone
Many people around you are going through and struggling with the same challenges you are. This is why it is important to build a community for yourself, so you have people you trust, people you can talk to. They can help you through it. Most upperclassmen can tell you about a teacher, a friend, anyone, that they felt they could connect with. Someone is always there for you.
- Get Involved
This is the most repeated advice from students and staff. Getting involved is what is going to make your experience at Shawnee High School much more enjoyable, more memorable. Embrace our community. You will not regret it.
