The musical, Newsies, written by Harvey Fierstein, has been a national phenomenon since its debut in 2012. Based on the 1899 strike in New York, the musical follows the story of a group of newsboys struggling to keep up with increasing prices affecting their ability to live. This strike crippled the distribution and sales of the New York Journal and the New York World, eventually leading to the issue being resolved.
The original production of the Newsies story was a movie produced in 1992 by Walt Disney Pictures. Referred to as a “box office bomb,” the movie was received quite negatively by the public, and Disney scrapped all other related projects. The small number of fans that did enjoy the movie, however, began to put on small productions of the musical numbers throughout high schools and other community theaters. This community grew until Disney recognized the demand for an official musical, and the pilot debuted in 2011.
The musical version was an immediate hit, with theaters having turn-outs that still hold the records today. Many youths in America, especially adored this musical, as it empowered young people and the impact of organized action. The story has been compared by many to causes like Black Lives Matter, showing its continuing relevance of young people standing up for justice.
This February, Shawnee High School continues spreading this message with our very own production of Newsies. Through the many current political and international events happening around the world, we can use this musical to remember the power of the people through action, perseverance, and solidarity. Logan Braatz, a student actor playing Jack Kelly says, “I think the music and concept of the show gives us something that we really need to hear, especially in this modern time. It’s about people standing up for what they believe in and their rights. No matter how hard or strong the opposition, if you work together and believe in yourselves you can ‘conquer the giants.’”
You can support our very own Shawnee Renegade Theater Department by coming to a performance on the 20th and 27th at 7pm and or 21st and 28th at 2pm or 7pm.
